The King of Gemstones — And Why That Title Still Holds
There's a reason Ruby has been called the king of gemstones for centuries. Known as Manik in Hindi and Sanskrit, and Yakut in Arabic, this deep red stone has sat on the crowns of emperors, adorned the rings of warriors, and been passed down through families as something more than just jewelry — as an heirloom, a talisman, a story.
As a third-generation gemologist, I've handled thousands of gemstones. And still, there's something about holding a true, untreated Ruby that stops you for a moment. The color isn't just red — it glows. It looks like light is coming from inside it.
In Vedic astrology, Ruby is linked to Surya — the Sun — and is believed to carry its energy: warmth, vitality, authority, and clarity. Whether you wear it for its metaphysical properties or simply because it's one of the most beautiful things nature has ever made, a genuine Ruby is worth understanding before you buy one.
What Wearing a Ruby Is Actually Said to Do
People come to us asking about Rubies for all kinds of reasons — some are following a gemologist's recommendation based on their horoscope, others are drawn to the stone instinctively. Here's what Ruby is traditionally believed to offer:
It strengthens confidence and leadership. If you've been second-guessing yourself, feeling overlooked at work, or struggling to assert yourself — Ruby is considered the stone for exactly that. It's associated with the Sun, and the Sun doesn't hesitate.
It supports heart health and physical vitality. In Ayurvedic and gem therapy traditions, Ruby is said to improve circulation and bring energy to a body that feels sluggish or depleted.
It attracts recognition and success. Ruby isn't a quiet stone. It's for people who are ready to be seen — in their careers, their relationships, and their lives.
It offers protection. Many wearers report a sense of clarity and security, a feeling that obstacles seem less formidable.
And perhaps most importantly for those following Vedic astrology: if the Sun (Surya) is weak or afflicted in your birth chart, wearing a Ruby is believed to strengthen its positive influence — improving health, self-confidence, and your relationship with authority figures, including your father.
That said, I always advise people to consult an experienced astrologer before wearing any gemstone. The right stone for one person may not be right for another.
Where Rubies Come From — And Why Origin Matters More Than You Think
Not all Rubies are created equal. Where a Ruby comes from has a profound impact on its quality, rarity, and value. Here's what you need to know:
Burma (Myanmar) — The Gold Standard
The most coveted Rubies in the world come from the Mogok valley in Myanmar, historically called Old Burma. The specific combination of minerals in this region produces what gemologists call pigeon blood red — a pure, vivid crimson with a slight blue undertone that gives the stone an almost electric quality. Genuine, unheated Old Burma Rubies are among the rarest and most valuable gemstones on earth. If someone offers you one at a bargain price, be skeptical.
Mozambique and Africa — The Rising Stars
In recent decades, Africa has emerged as a source of genuinely beautiful, high-quality Rubies. Mozambican Rubies, in particular, can rival Burmese stones in terms of color saturation. They're more accessible in price and, importantly, can be found in natural, untreated form — which is what we always prioritize.
Thailand (Bangkok) — Proceed with Caution
Thailand has long been a hub for Ruby treatment, not just mining. The vast majority of Thai Rubies on the market have been heat-treated, sometimes heavily, to improve their color and clarity. These stones aren't worthless — but they are fundamentally different from untreated stones, and they should be priced accordingly. The problem is that many sellers don't disclose this.
The "New Burma" Problem — Something Every Buyer Should Know
Here's something I wish more people understood before walking into a gemstone shop:
The phrase "New Burma Ruby" has become one of the most misleading terms in the trade. Sellers use it to imply Burmese origin and quality, but in reality, the majority of stones marketed this way are heat-treated Rubies from other origins, sometimes heavily processed. The name sounds prestigious. The stone often is not.
Genuine, untreated Rubies — from Burma or anywhere else — are rare. They require verification by a qualified gemologist and certification from a recognized, government-approved laboratory. No exceptions.
How to Tell If a Ruby Is Real and Worth Buying
When you're looking at a Ruby, here's what actually matters:
Laboratory certification. Always ask for a certificate from a government-approved gemological lab. The certificate should specify whether the stone is natural, whether it has been heat-treated or glass-filled, and ideally confirm its geographic origin. If a seller can't produce documentation, walk away.
"Untreated" is everything. A treated Ruby and an untreated Ruby can look almost identical to the untrained eye — but they are worlds apart in value. Heat treatment permanently alters the stone's structure. It's not subtle, and it's not reversible. An untreated Ruby will always appreciate in value over time. A treated one, typically, will not.
Natural inclusions are a good sign. A truly natural Ruby will have internal characteristics — small inclusions, growth patterns — that a glass-filled or synthetic stone won't. Counterintuitively, if a Ruby looks too perfect, that's a reason to ask more questions.
Trust the expertise behind the sale. Buy from someone who can explain all of this to you — not just quote you a price.
Why Families Keep Coming Back to Shree Heritage Jewels
We're not a shop that opened last year with an Instagram page and a supplier catalog. Shree Heritage Jewels has been built over three generations in Andheri West, Mumbai. My grandfather sourced stones. My father learned to read them. I grew up in a world where a gemstone's story — where it came from, how it was formed, whether it was treated — mattered as much as its appearance.
Here's what that translates to for you as a buyer:
Every Ruby in our collection is 100% natural and untreated. We simply don't stock treated stones. That's not a marketing claim — it's a sourcing philosophy that goes back decades.
Every stone comes with certification from government-approved laboratories. You'll know exactly what you're getting.
We carry Rubies from both Burma and Africa, across a wide range of sizes and price points. Whether you're buying your first gemstone or adding to a serious collection, we'll have something worth considering.
You can see the journey from raw gemstone to finished jewelry. We make custom rings and pendants — and we can turn a stone around in a day. Watching a rough stone become a finished piece is something our customers tell us they never forget.
We're a physical store you can walk into. You can hold the stones. You can ask questions. You can take your time. We also ship across India for those who can't visit in person.
Come and See for Yourself
If you've read this far, you already know more about Rubies than most people who've owned one for years. The next step is to hold one — to see that depth of color in person and understand why kings once went to war over these stones.
We'd love to show you what a real Ruby looks like.
